Some people love pets. Some people tolerate pets. Some people actually, really hate pets. Some actual people and some corporate persons sell pets. Individually each person goes about their business related to pets and thinks they are doing normal things in their lives. The truth is that the entire pet ecosystem is out of whack. Seriously out of whack. Anyone willingly participating in a system responsible for the death of a cat or dog in America every 8 seconds is fantastically deluded or sadistically deranged. Nevertheless, here we are with “the people” up to their lips in vet bills and cat taco outfits and sh*t management solutions. Everywhere you go there are pets. Everybody is either convinced or getting convinced that pets are a good fit with whatever they are doing at the moment. Be it working, playing, eating, teaching, learning, shopping,… it doesn’t matter they think a pet should be there. I propose a climb-down from pet ubiquity. I love my cat and can't imagine life without her. But I'm willing to give credit where credit is due. Mr. Callahan makes some good points about the down side of pet ownership in America, but better than that, his ranting is hilarious! While my husband cooks dinner, I read pages from the book outloud, and we are provided with 10 minutes of fabulous entertainment together before sitting down to eat. We are both working stiffs in stressful jobs, and frankly, we find this to be a wonderful way to chill out after work and just have a good time with eachother. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to laugh. Callahan's wit and no shame approach is priceless!!
So refreshing to have someone willing to address the Pet Industry. Animals bred until ti death and craziness. Food worse that humans get (which can be pretty bad!} Try not to take this personally but think about about how you contribute to the madness and take some positive steps!
Next time you see a driver threatening your life as they drive with a dog crawling over them REMEMBER you can help stop the madness!
Every now and then a book comes along which dares to lay it on the line, set the record straight, tell it like it is. Though my wife and I do not endorse every opinion of Mr. Callahan, we do believe that his work should be read and discussed by every pet owning American. With illuminating and enchanting graphics, Mr Callahan, makes a strong argument that pet ownership and the pet business in America, which he aptly calls "Big Pet", has gone insane. Here in San Francisco, where dog walking ("wrangling") is an industry, it is hard to dismiss his claims. The author goes beyond a critique of the activities of pet owners and their foibles; he uses pet ownership as a means to observe and understand present day America.
