Oh my word.. Just when I thought I couldn't love Shepley and America any more than I already did. *SWOON* Not gonna lie, I've got me a serious soft spot for those Maddox boys. And while Travis will always be my Number 1, Shepley has absolutely and unequivocally claimed, for any and all time, Number 2 trailing my dear Trav by a hair!!! Holy cow I loved this story! Sweet, sad, romantic, scary, nostalgic, hopeful... sigh... it just ticked all of my "Happy Story" boxes. Yes, I'm gushing, but I just finished and I'm still riding my book high. :)

Something Beautiful A Novella edition by Jamie McGuire Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Something Beautiful is the companion novella to Beautiful Disaster/Walking Disaster/A Beautiful Wedding by Jamie McGuire. I highly recommend reading those before reading Something Beautiful. Actually, I highly recommend reading Beautiful Oblivion, Beautiful Redemption, and Beautiful Sacrifice before reading Something Beautiful as well. Something Beautiful and my review may contain spoilers to these previous books.
We first met America and Shepley in Beautiful Disaster. America is Abby's best friend, and Shepley is Travis' cousin. This novella is told through both America and Shepley's POVs. With their 3 year relationship almost slowing down, America hopes that one final road trip to visit her parents before the new semester begins will help push their relationship back into a direction that they both need. With a storm brewing inside the car and outside, will they get a chance to say the things they need to say to each other?
I read Beautiful Disaster back in December 2011. I've been waiting to read more about America and Shepley since then! Jamie McGuire packed enough humor, romance, action, and suspense in this novella that it could have filled two full length novels. Without spoiling anything, we get to see a few scenes in the years before where they're at now, which was really fun. I'll leave you with one of my favorite lines from the book I wasn’t just in love with her. It was like taking my first breath, then the second, and then every breath after that.
Such a short and sweet novel giving the readers a chance to see Shepley and America's relationship. I would have liked it better if it didn't jump from one major situation to another, but just started with their relationship when things were changing for them.
I would definitely recommend that anyone who hasn't read the previous books in the series to read them before this one. Even though the main characters are different from "Beautiful Disaster" this follows the time frame of that novel and the reader will get more understanding of what is going on if they read Travis and Abby's story first. However, you could read this novel by itself - you just might not understand everything that is happening.
Because McGuire wrote this novel the way that she did and jumped around throughout 3 years of their relationship into 100 pages, it was a bit clunky and stuttery. I think it could have been written a bit better to help the reader understand exactly when the text was happening, but I was able to follow after a bit of thought.
America and Shepley are no Abby and Travis. Different people, different story, different drama. I loved the new aspect of the storm added to this and I got worried for a minute about one character. I'm glad McGuire wasn't evil.
I think dedicated fans of McGuire will really like this addition to the Beautiful series and it will be a bit hit!
As always, Jamie leaves you wanting more at the end of the story. This novella gives readers a great look into the story of how SheMerica becomes such a strong facet of the Maddox clan. Starting with freshman orientation, Jamie takes you through the twists and turns of Shepley and America's relationship, including some highlights of the story we know and love, as well as a few "new" scenes about Travis and Abby.
This is a must read for all McGuire fans as well as anyone looking for a love story that they can relate to. Neither Shepley or America are perfect, theit relationship doesn't come easily or fit into some cookie cutter mold, but they are both willing to fight for it and to fight for eachother, making the story that much more enjoyable.
I love that Jamie is able to make each Maddox man just as desirable as the previous ones, if not more so in some aspects. Shepley is the easy one to love, but this story allowed me to fall in love with America and everything she stands for.
I'm definitely feeling the effects of my book hangover today and the only cure in sight is more Maddox madness.... can't wait until we get the next piece of the Maddox puzzle, even just a tidbit.
I have been waiting for this story since I first read and fell in love with Shepley and America in Beautiful Disaster. This is an absolutely perfect addition to the Beautiful series. I have always loved Shepley, but after getting a more in depth look at who he is and the other sides to his personality, I fell even more in love. His partner in crime, America, is the best friend that everyone wishes they had. She’s loyal, fun, and would do anything for her best friend Abby.
I can easily say that I love Shepley and America together just as much as I loved Travis and Abby. Even though this is a fictional story, Jamie writes it in such a way that you feel like you are right there in the story with them. Shepley and America have struggles throughout the story that many people can understand and relate to.
Talk about action! I was sucked into their story immediately and couldn’t put the book down. I wasn’t sure where Jamie was going to go with their story, and she definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. Jamie knows how to write action and suspense into any story. This one had an especially interesting “twist” to it.
Shepley and America get 5 shooting stars!
